Floating Cities 2019
FIREWORKS GALLERY, BRISBANE AU
Acting as a mini survey of work created since relocating to Asia in 2014, Floating Cities… charts the development of a visual language entangled with the artist’s fascination with the seemingly infinite skylines of globalised megacities. It reflects a rapidly changing landscape with no horizon constantly in a state of flux; a landscape dominated by the digital, flooded with information and connected by unseen networks. Through this lens, Trevethan explores the impact of technologies on our perception of colour and space as well as how we process visual information.
The works in Floating Cities form an ever-expanding cityscape that plays on the infinite repeatability of images in the digital age, manipulating architectural motifs and electronic colours to draw parallels to the dizzying pace of the globalized economy, a world of instantaneous transactions in which we often experience a mental and emotional disorientation. A world shaped by the unwavering flatness of screens, by the endlessness of feedback loops and fake news. A world where nothing is seen in isolation, everything is relational and we are never offline.
